Kyra Shaughnessy is a singer/songwriter/poet based in the Eastern Townships and Montréal area of Québec.
After her first Slam poetry open mic, at age 15, led to selection for the CBC National Poetry Slam, she quickly became known as one of Montréal’s top ten spoken word artist’s (Montreal Mirror, 2006-2007).
Taking up guitar and banjo she began translating poetry into music, and in 2006 completed her first cross-Canada tour. Inspired by the traditions of folk, roots and gospel music, her songs are thoughtful and direct, joyful and intelligently critical.To quote journalist Claudia Collard, « Kyra is a prodigy…a harmonious marriage of candour and maturity…her warm, powerful voice leaves audiences asking for more! »
In 2009 she launched her first album, One Step Closer. December 2010 saw the release of her second album, featuring a number of talented guest musicians, which she launched with another cross-country tour. Singing in both French and English her music engages a wide-range of audiences and has been in the charts of community radios across Canada.
Since winter 2009 Kyra has also been a member of 6 Pieds Sur Terre, a bilingual, world/folk music band based out of Eastern Québec.
